Protective hairstyle enthusiasts and naturalistas rejoice! A new style has entered the hair game and she is called the passion twist — hair savior and style extraordinaire.
The passion twist hairstyle is the carefree and coily love child of the Senegalese twists and goddess locs. It’s also an upgrade from the protective style box braids. Created by hairstylist Kailyn Rogers, passion twist braids give your hair a sculptured look without stressing you out on maintenance. The twists give you an effortless boho look.

What are Passion Twists?
As mentioned above, passion twists were created by Miami-based hairstylist Kailyn Rogers. Otherwise known as The Boho Babe, Rogers created the online-famous hairdo after one of her clients requested for a natural-looking, low-maintenance hairstyle. Her attempts at inventing a new hairstyle landed her at the hair store. She got the hair that she needed, started experimenting and ended up with a new look on her first try.
She debuted the passion twist hair agenda in January 2018. She posted the look on her Instagram and the hairstyle went viral. Due to the growing popularity of the look, many fans asked Rogers for a tutorial, which she posted on her YouTube channel. The video went viral and as of writing, it has more than a million views.
What Sets Passion Twists Apart from Spring Twists and Locs?
Some people think that passion twists aren’t new to the hairstyles world. Some people even think they’re sleek ponytails with braids.
However, fans of Rogers’ new look rave on her YouTube video’s comments section. One viewer mentioned that passion twists strike the balance between the “too springy” spring twists and the “too faux” aspect of faux locs. Many viewers commented that this protective hairstyle was unlike the other basic hairstyles out there.
The secret to passion twists is in the tie-in of your chosen braiding hair (in Rogers’ case, she recommends using the Freetress Water Wave braiding hair). These braids give you curly locks that feel silky to the touch. Once you’ve installed the hair, your twists will unravel and give you a gorgeous look.
How are Passion Twists Installed?
The first step is to wash your hair. Wash it thoroughly and make sure it’s moisturized and dry enough. Once you’ve washed your hair, part your hair into smaller sections and work with these areas for your desired look. You can make your passion twists chunky, thin or even a mix of both (if you want something unique).
Prepare your braiding hair with an X-shaped partition for each segment. The actual segment must be divided in half before you start twisting. Once you’re good to go, apply some edge control gel on your fingertips and start wrapping. Wrap the hair where your real hair touches the scalp. Twist the braiding hair you arranged earlier and twist them with the halves of your real hair. This gives you the tension needed to lock the braids at the roots.
Once the braids are in place, re-section the joint hair into two strands and twist them together. Do the twisting with enough force to keep them from tangling (while maintaining a curly form). You should end up with an S-shaped curl.
Do these steps again with every twist that you make. In general, you can achieve the look with seven bundles of braiding hair. But if you want larger passion twists, 10 packs should do.
How Long Does It Take to Install Passion Twists?
If you’re having a professional install your passion twist braids, the session might take anywhere from four to eight hours. The amount of time needed to install your braids depends on your desired thickness or length, as well as the speed of the stylist.
On the other hand, if you try to install the twists yourself, the entire thing can take up to eight hours. It sounds daunting, but don’t despair! The results are worth it.
How Long Do Passion Twists Last?
According to Rogers, the style can last up to two months. Regular touchups can help extend your passion twist’s life for a few more weeks. Similar to other twisted hairstyles, smaller passion twists last longer and offer fullness and volume. Being generous with your use of holding mousse is good for your twists too.
When it comes to water, it won’t affect your hairstyle. So, don’t worry about washing your hair or swimming ruining your passion twists. However, be mindful with your twists, especially if you are wetting them since you don’t want them to unravel.
While passion twists are gorgeous, you don’t want them installed for too long. Let your natural hair breathe once in a while. Avoid keeping this protective style for more than 12 weeks.
How Does Your Hair Benefit from Passion Twists?
Passion twist is a good protective hairstyle because it keeps your locks healthy and protected. They protect your hair from external elements while giving it a gorgeous look. It also gives you easy access to your scalp, which you should regularly moisturize (a must-have for healthy and happy locks).
What is the Upkeep for a Passion Twist Hairstyle?
Regardless of whether it’s winter or summer, passion twists are great at protecting your hair. Since your hair is tucked away behind your faux locks, you don’t have to worry much about the upkeep. The best part is you can retain its length. Still, a little maintenance is required to make sure your hair is always looking its best.
One of the easiest ways to maintain moisture is using a spray-on conditioner. A conditioning spray is a lightweight hair product that nourishes dry hair with essential oils. Apart from promoting hydration to minimize breakage, make sure that your scalp is always clean. Use scalp lotion to reduce itch and buildup.
Lastly, make sure that you have a good sleep regimen for your hair. You can throw on a satin scarf or bonnet or you can pile your twist up in a high ponytail (aka the pineapple).
How Do You Prepare Your Hair for a Passion Twist?
Before you install your braids, make sure that your hair is clean. Use a sulfate shampoo to get rid of any build-up. Once you’ve shampooed your hair, apply a 30-minute deep conditioning treatment to promote hydration. After washing and conditioning your hair, blow-dry it then apply some hair oil.
So, if you’re passionate about keeping your hair gorgeous and healthy, why not give passion twists a try?
